In the late 2000’s, Activision approached Toys for Bob about reviving a Vivendi franchise. Toys for Bob chose Spyro, and two years later, they released Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. It was unlike anything the industry had seen before. Virtual DLC had been in the industry for years by this point, but physical toys that served as DLC was a huge gamble. It paid off, and now, two years and $500 million dollars later, Skylanders Swap force joins the fray, and this time, they’re changing the game up.
Skylanders Swap Force, launched at midnight today and is the third installment of the Skylanders series, following 2012’s Skylanders Giants. All previous Skylanders figures will be compatible with Skylanders Swap Force, allowing older characters to enter the new areas. You will still have to buy the bundle pack, though, as the new figures require an updated portal.
The main change about Skylanders Swap Force isn’t directly with the game, but rather the toy characters. For Swap Force, sixteen brand new characters will be released. Six of these characters can have their top portion separated from their bottom portion, and you can attach them to other characters in the Swap Force line, to create one of 256 combinations between the six Swap Force characters. Also, in a series first, the characters in Skylander Swap Force will be able to jump within the game, which has been a much-requested feature since the game’s debut.
There are a lot of figures getting released, so I’m going to break it down as easy as I can.
The six Skylanders characters that you’ll be able to mix and match are Blast Zone, Wash Buckler, Rattle Shake, Free Ranger, Hoot Loop, and Magna Charge. Blast Zone and Wash Buckler are included with the starter pack. These figures are larger than regular figures and will retail for $14.99.
Swap Force is bringing four new regular characters to the set. Those four characters are Slobber Tooth, Roller Brawl, Countdown, and Zoo Lou. These characters will be priced at $9.99 each.
Lightcore figures are awesome – these characters will light up when they’re on the portal, and when they enter the game, they explode onto the scene. The Swap Force Lightcore series includes a mixture of new and old characters. The five wave 1 Lightcore characters are Grim Creeper, Smolderdash, Star Strike, Flashwing, and Warnado. Lightcore figures will retail for $12.99.
They’re releasing some older figures in a different pose. These include Lava Barf Eruptor from Series 3, Mega Ram Spyro from Series 3, Blizzard Chill from Series 2, and Super Gulp Pop Fizz from Series 2. Ninja Stealth from Season 3, who will also be in a new pose, is included in all Swap Force starter packs.
Finally, there are three characters that will only be available in bundle packs. Pop Thorn, new to Swap Force, is only available in the Tower of Time Adventure Pack, along with a new Tower of Time level and two items, a battle hammer and a sky diamond. Bumble Blast, new to Swap Force, and Knockout Terrafin, an older character with a new pose from Series 3, are only available with the Fiery Forge Battle Pack, which also includes Fiery Forge, a new multiplayer arena.
